This weekend, we had an extra day off of work. The more time I spend at home, the more I just want to stay at home. Why is it that when you have vacation your body decides it is time to get sick. I was sick over Christmas break (the flu) and am sick over this short break (a cold). It makes it quite difficult to get anything done when all you want to do is sleep and eat. I got two more applications mailed out on Saturday. I really wish that there were one application form for all college positions, something that you could just mail to the different places. Spending an hour and a half on each and every application makes you really, really consider twice before applying to too many places. I spent $3.00 on mailing out two application packets at the post office, then I went to the local thrift store. I really just meant to look, but I wound up spending a little money there. I got six books and an antique clutch (hand held purse) for $1.50 as they were having a ½ price sale on their books. I found three hard-backs and three paperbacks. One of the hardbacks is a Voluntary Simplicity book, so I feel like I did pretty good (even getting it from PBS would have cost me $2.50). I really don’t need anything that I bought, but it was so much fun to go shopping, and I didn’t spend hardly anything. I had needed a shopping fix, and by spending the $1.50 there, it squashed the need to drive to Chillicothe and go to the stores there. It is weird, I’m not bored, I have a ton of stuff to do, but I am feeling the compulsion to go shopping quite strongly this week. I think it is because I do have so much work to do, I’m stressed and want to shop as a stress relief.
After going to the thrift store, I broke one of my own rules. I went to the grocery store while hungry. All I actually needed was a dozen eggs, but I wound up spending $8.00. I got eggs, some potato chips and a couple of brownie mixes. I didn’t do too terribly bad, but had I not been hungry, then in all likelihood I would have gotten out of there for under $2.00, the price of the eggs. I didn’t really need the chips or the brownie mix (I’m pretty sure I already have some cake mixes), but I will use them, and they’re not the pre-made brownies that my hungry stomach really, really wanted me to buy, so I’ll take the small victory. I’ll make sure that when I’m in Kirksville on Wednesday night I’ll eat before I shop.
Let me know what you all think of my new website. I’m going to be posting all of my new posts over there as well as here for a bit. I am going to eventually transfer completely to www.yearoffrugality.com, for a variety of reasons. Let me know what I can do to improve the site and make it more user friendly.

yeah! I've missed reading and glad you're back! I've had the urge to shop lately..shopping and eating seem to be my stress busters and I'm trying to cut way back on both though not entirely successful. My thrift stores here seem to be more expensive than others I've heard about. I quilt and one quilter online a few years ago was going on about how she got all these bags of flannel shirts for 50 cents per bag! gosh they sell for a minimum of $2 per shirt here! I did find a nice queen/king size crocheted afghan at one for 5 bucks a few years back though - proud of that sucker! my parents do a lot of estate sales for fun and they've pretty much built up my odds and ends of plates/bowls! I've made 3 trips to wal-mart the past week and spent bucks each time though mostly on groceries so not too bad. I did buy some dishtowels on clearance last night and I can always use those!
ReplyDeleteSusanna,
ReplyDeleteI think we're really lucky here with thrift stores...and you also have to shop the church-run ones to get the really good deals. You can get flannel shirts for 10 cents each here. Shopping and eating are my stress busters too...I'm trying to convince myself that cleaning can help get rid of stress, but my mind just isn't buying it. I'm glad that Wal-Mart is 20 minutes away...it is easier to avoid than when you live right down the street from it.
